Last Thursday was really busy with appointments and we ended up with a completely full "board" (listing of inpatients). Now having 2 inpatients and seeing appointments wouldn't be *that* bad if:
a. I didn't have to do all my inpatient treatments (ahh, the joy of being a student)
b. it didn't take literally twice as long to do or find things as it does in a private practice (mainly because of hospital policies)
c. I didn't have to write super-detailed records
Anyway, I was so exhausted Saturday morning that I had to fight the urge to vomit. Then one of my inpatient's conditions worsened so I had to do a crap-ton more diagnostics and treatments. Then D called me; his car had broken down 1/2 hour away from where I was and he needed me to come get him. I don't really remember the drive there and am grateful I made it there safely. Then I spent more quality time Saturday evening, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening trying to stabilize the aforementioned inpatient.
This week has eased a tiny bit. My inpatients are fairly stable and one (possibly two) is (are) going home tomorrow. It seems like the busy times come and go, similar to the midterm crunch times in previous years.
I'm still learning a lot but will happily move on to another rotation where maybe I can sleep and pee once in a while. Perhaps dentistry?
